On this trip we will travel to the small, safe, rural community of Coopevega located in northern Costa Rica where we will work with the local community members to build a multisport court for soccer, volleyball, and basketball. Coopevega is an agricultural community working on the nearby sugar cane farms. There are currently no after school activities for the local children with the exception of an occasional pick up soccer game, but even then it is usually just for the boys so a multi-use court also provides opportunities for girls to play basketball and volleyball, sports which are can be more acceptable for girls.
We will be staying in the community in a central community building sleeping on mattresses on the floor. We will work handson and side-by-side with the locals and eat authentic Costa Rican food. During the whole trip we will be fully immersed in the Costa Rican culture learning local traditions, customs, and way of life.
It is important to note that this court will be built with the community not for the community. The community members of Coopevega, local leaders, and a Peace Corps Volunteer living there are all very motivated to make this court a reality and from the beginning they have been the driving factor planning this project to see it come to fruition.
