The island of Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) is known as ‘Nature Island’ and was one of Lonely Planet’s top travel destinations for 2016. On this trip we will travel to the small community of Thibaud where we will help the local community members build a multi-use sports court. This court will mainly be used for
basketball and netball (similar to basketball but without a backboard) by everyone in the community. Their current court has almost completely fallen apart (see pic) and the girls Netball team can only practice passing the ball but not scoring.
We will be staying with families in local homes in the community, working hands-on and side-by-side with the locals, and eating delicious home cooked Dominican food. During the whole trip we will be immersed in the Dominican culture. The finished cement court will benefit the youth of the community and can even be used during the rainy season when area fields are muddy. It will mainly be used for Netball but, additionally, the court will be used for community celebrations, dances, gatherings, and even as a teaching space.
